John Cole
I'm located on the east coast, and sadly unable to be present for the
memorial, but will contribute stories and photos to the web over time.
Geoff's departure removes the possibility of future collaborations which I happily anticipated.
But I remember his humor, laughter, keen mind, hospitality, and his
occasional stubbornness. He did a great deal of work for the IEEE Media
Management System Architecture for which I will always be grateful. I
hope his cats faired well after his death: Geoff cared a great deal for
them.
Best,

I was fortunate to work with Geoff at Quantum and SANlight, and we had just started a consulting
arrangement with him at Timespring. I was looking forward to his guidance on a significant project.
I've found his insights powerful and useful in my work and was hoping to acquire a few more.
The attached image is from a corner of a white board Geoff was working on at the Timespring offices.
It may be familiar to some of you as it is his view of the evolution of filesystems, and something he has
talked about before. Also familiar will be "BIG DATA."
Sadly,

I worked for Geoff at Silicon Graphics, as a member of his Storage Systems team, where XFS was developed. Thanks to Geoff this was one of the best learning and growing experiences of my career.
I also had the privilege of skiing and flying with Geoff on a few occasions. Geoff lived to teach others. My experience was no different: he gave me some good tips for powder skiing, and encouraged me to pursue my own aviation dreams.
While in recent years our contact was sparse, those occasions were enjoyable and of course helpful (that was Geoff's way). My wife and I will miss him greatly.
With great sorrow,
Chuck Bullis
