Hi all, I was a graduate student with Geoff at Berkeley (actually I was in Astronomy, but my wife was in CS with Geoff). I just discovered all of this a few minutes ago and I am greatly saddened to hear about Geoff's death. I haven't had any contact with Geoff since exchanging some email about 15 years ago... I still have fond memories of many fine dinners before an evening at the San Francisco Symphony. Goeff organized a big purchase of student-rate tickets for the entire season. Geoff also insisted that we (my wife and I) had to learn how to drive a standard transmission and not only volunteered to teach us, but did so on his own car - and managed not to wince too much when we made our frequent noisy errors. I also learned to downhill ski with Geoff in several visits to the Reno/Lake Tahoe region in the early 80s. A measure of a person's life: how many great memories do they leave us with. Geoff has left me with many...

I also remember going to the symphony with Geoff at the helm. I wish I had gone more often, but it always seemed so expensive, although in hindsight it was pretty cheap, and Geoff certainly knew the right thing to do. I recall lovely dinners as well, but I recall that we always managed to eat and run and get to our seats in the symphony just about 30 seconds before the conductor lifted his baton.
I also recently remembered getting a ride in lower Manhattan in 1981, and then remembered that it was, of course, Geoff at the wheel of the car. We drove through the financial district shortly after noon, and as a country boy, my eyes were ready to pop out of my skull. Geoff explained that the New Yorkers were being nice to us, since he was driving his father's car, complete with Florida license plates. But he also knew what to do, and how to push his way through the throngs.
A month ago I hauled out of storage a nice miniature set of speakers I have had since grad school. I wanted to set up a second sound system in our house. Sure enough, I remembered I had bought those speakers after consulting with Geoff about his choice of speakers, and how I got a long, well structured and presumably accurate explanation of which speaker was best.
